VAIO Update

What is VAIO Update?

VAIO Update is an Internet function from Sony that provides you with important product-related information and easy access to updates for VAIO application and drivers, which are recommended to help keep your VAIO computer running efficiently.

Note: This program only provides access to certain hardware drivers and Sony controlled software. To update Windows operating system files, please go to Help & Support Center or VAIO Help & Support on your computer and select Windows Update. 

Before you begin

Please review this important information about using VAIO Update.

  • You must have an Internet connection.
  • You must be logged on to your computer with a user account that has Administrator access rights.
  • When using it for the first time, you must set up the VAIO Update program options.
    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, and click VAIO Update 3
    1. Click VAIO Update Options.

      Note: If a A program needs your permission to continue message appears, click Continue.

    1. Select the following program options:
      • Automatically check for updates
      • Display the VAIO Update icon in the Task bar
    2. Click OK to close the window.
  • Downloaded update files are saved on your computer hard drive in the C:\Update directory.   
  • Some update files are very large. It is recommended that you make sure there is enough available space on the C:\ drive before downloading the file(s).  These steps may vary by operating system.
    1. On the VAIO Update page, check the file size of the desired update(s).
    1. Click Start, and click Computer.
    2. Under Hard Disk Drives, check the size listed for Local Disk (C:).

      (E.g.:  80.4 GB free of 104 GB).

    Note:  If there is insufficient space, delete or move existing files or programs to free up the necessary amount of space.

  • When performing Automatic Updates installation, the downloaded files are automatically deleted as part of the process. Files that you download for Manual Updates will remain in the C:\Update directory. Once a Manual Update has been successfully installed, you can delete the downloaded file.
  • If you stop or cancel the download process before completion, the process cannot be resumed from the point of cancellation. It must be started all over again.
  • When using VAIO Update, ActiveX and Java Script controls must be set to active in the Internet Explorer browser. If Internet Explorer is in its original default condition, these controls should already be active. 
     
    To verify that Active X and Java Script controls are active, open the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser and perform the following:
    1. From program menu, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
    1. At the Internet Options window, click the Security tab.
    2. Click the Custom level… button to open the Security Settings window.
    3. Scroll down the list and confirm that the following items are set to Enable.
          • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins
          • Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls
 
          • Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting*

        *If you change the setting on this item, the computer will need to be restarted

        in order for the change to take effect.

      5.  Scroll down the list and confirm that the following item is set to Prompt

           (recommended)

          • Download signed ActiveX controls.
    1. Click OK to save any changes and then close all windows. You should now be set to run VAIO Update.

Important Note

If Internet Security software, such as Norton Internet Security by Symantec (included in most VAIO models), PC Security Suite by McAfee, or Virus Buster by Trend Micro, is installed on your computer, VAIO Update may not work properly due to the setup of the firewall.

To enable VAIO Update to work, the security option of the Internet Security program needs to be set to allow Internet access of the "VAIOUpdt.exe" VAIO Update program file.

For additional information about Internet security or setting up a firewall, please refer to the help file of your Internet security program. 

Accessing VAIO Update

To access VAIO Update, peform one of the following:

  • Click Start, point to All Programs, and click VAIO Update 3.
  • Click the Welcome to VAIO Update taskbar pop up.

The Welcome to VAIO Update taskbar pop up appears the very first time you log on to your new computer; subsequently, it appears each time you log on and when new Sony controlled programs are made available for your computer. 

VAIO Update Screen

The VAIO Update screen is divided into two main sections: Important Information and Update Programs.

Important Information

The Important Information section is divided into two areas: Product Alerts and General Information. The Welcome to VAIO Update taskbar popup message appears each time new information are made available here.

Product Alerts

This area presents critical bulletins and messages, such as late, undocumented product changes, critical fixes, compatibility issues, and other types of vital product-related information from Sony VAIO Support.

General Information

This area provides articles designed to help you keep your VAIO computer operating properly, such as general upkeep/operating, compatibility and connectivity information, etc.

Update Programs

Each time you open VAIO Update, it checks the available file list and then scans your computer to determine if there are any VAIO application or driver updates available that have not yet been installed. Available updates are then listed in the Update Programs section.

Before using the Update Programs section, please note the following:

  • You must close all other active programs
  • Do not start any other program during the update process
  • Carefully follow all on-screen instructions
  • The file download pause and resume function is not available in environments that use Proxy Server

The Update Programs section is divided into two areas: Automatic Updates and Manual Updates.  

Automatic Updates

To begin, click to select (check) the associated box of the update(s) you wish to install, and then click the Update Now button. The VAIO Update program will download the selected update file(s) to the following location on your computer: C:\update\ update file name and then automatically install the updates on your computer. During this process, please follow any on-screen instructions that may appear.

Manual Updates

To begin, click to select (check) the associated box of the update(s) you wish to install, and then click the Update Now button. The VAIO Update program will download the selected update file(s) to the following location on your computer: C:\update\ update file name. Once the files are downloaded, you must go to the C:\update\ directory and run the installation manually..

To view installation instructions for each update(s) , click the applicable underlined update title in the VAIO Update page. A window will open presenting the installation instructions and a window to the update directory on your computer will open displaying the update’s executable file. Please follow the installation instructions to install the update to your computer.

How to Verify Installation

After installation completes, to verify the update(s) installed correctly, go to the top of the VAIO Update page and click Update List. The page will refresh and a red check mark will appear next to all updates that are currently installed on your computer.

    Question #1 How much time does it take to download the updates?
    Answer Download time depends on the size of the selected updates and your computer / Internet connection environment.

    Question #2 How do I know when the update installation is completed?    
    Answer When the update installation is completed, the status icon next to the update name changes to .    
         
    Question #3 Which update programs should be installed?    
    Answer Update programs with indicated next to the program name are critical updates, such as security updates, that are extremely important and should be always be installed. However, all programs listed contain necessary information for VAIO users and are recommended.    
         
    Question #4 What exactly is updated by each update?    
    Answer Detailed information about each update is available by clicking the update file name in the VAIO Update page.     
         
    Question #5 What are the differences between Automatic Updates and Manual Updates?    
    Answer Automatic Updates 
    After selecting an update file(s) and clicking Update Now, the files are downloaded and automatically installed. (Please follow any on-screen instructions that may appear).

    Manual Updates 
    After selecting an update file (s) and clicking Update Now, the program files are only downloaded. To install the file(s), you must follow the installation instructions, which can be viewed by clicking the update name on the VAIO Update page.
